Ich tipp mal auf folgende Formation:

Czerkawski-Sundin-Lindros

Tucker-Allison-O'Neill

Ponikarowsky-Antropov-Domi

Kilger-Stajan-Belak

LET THE LEAFS BATTLE BEGIN

Training camp opens with 62 fighting for jobs, but majority of roster spots are accounted for.

Starting this morning, 62 players will hit the ice in a bid to win a job at Maple Leafs training camp, but almost two-thirds of them stand a better chance of being hit by lightning or winning the lottery than they do of being in the lineup when the Leafs open the season Oct. 5. The vast majority of roster spots are already accounted for by players under contract and things got even more difficult for those on the bubble yesterday when both coach Pat Quinn and GM John Ferguson hinted that the days of the constant 23-man roster are over thanks to the salary cap of $39 million (all figures U.S.).

Although neither would say outright that the Leafs will not carry 23 players, Quinn said several times that 20 or 21 would be an ideal situation. That doesn't leave much room on a team that already has 17 players — including four full forward lines — signed to one-way NHL contracts. "Obviously, contract people who have signed ahead of time will probably have an edge," Quinn said. "But we do have guys with slots available that we're going to spend a lot of time looking at before we make any decisions. We're hopeful that one or two or three young guys step up for us."

Should the Leafs go with a 21-man roster, logic would dictate that there are two jobs open for skaters and one at backup goalie to be contested by frontrunner Mikael Tellqvist and Jean-Sebastien Aubin. Instead, there will be a much different dynamic present in Leaf camp and throughout the season that has almost everything to do with the new economic landscape. Those who will likely be most affected by it will be players such as Matt Stajan, Carlo Colaiacovo and Alexander Steen, all of whom can be moved to and from the minors without having to clear waivers.

But it also affects a player such as Nathan Perrott, who signed a two-way contract yesterday and faces the prospect of making the team out of training camp or being stuck in the minors all season. Perrott's NHL salary would be $450,000 with a minor-league stipend of $150,000. Because he earns more than $75,000 in the minors he can't be called up without having to clear waivers and if another team claims him, the Leafs would be responsible for paying half his salary with that total counting against the salary cap.

Veteran defenceman Brad Brown was signed to a two-way deal that would pay him $450,000 in the NHL and $75,000 in the minors, which means there's a good chance he'll be up and down throughout the season. Should a journeyman fourth-liner such as Chad Kilger be usurped by one of the Leafs' younger forwards in camp, there's a chance that Kilger could make $475,000 playing the entire year in the minors. But no players will be on and off the roster more than Stajan, Colaiacovo and Steen, should they make the team. There's a very good chance that Steen will do just that and there is speculation that Quinn is considering the idea of turning him into a left winger and playing him alongside Mats Sundin.

That would leave the Leafs the option of sending all three to the Toronto Marlies for short stints throughout the season in order to create room for the salary cap. For example, should the Leafs discover on a game day at home that Colaiacovo will be the extra defenceman that night, they can instead send him to the Marlies before 5 p.m. that day instead of having him watch the game from the press box as a healthy scratch. Since players are paid per day based on a 180-day season (not including the Olympic break), they would save about $4,800 in cap space.

Quinn historically has given his players Sundays off and if Colaiacovo, Stajan and Steen were all sent to the Marlies for that day, the Leafs would save about $14,200 in cap space. Ferguson acknowledged that having the organization's American Hockey League affiliate in the same city makes it much easier for the team to operate with a smaller roster. "It involves players who can move up and down (without clearing waivers)," Ferguson said. "But, yes, that is one of the benefits of moving the Marlies to the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto."

All of which doesn't leave much of a chance for players such as Steve Thomas and Bryan Marchment, long-time veterans who are in camp on tryout contracts. "I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I could contribute," said the 42-year-old Thomas. "If I make this hockey team this year, it's because of who I am, not who I've been in the past. My ego is totally out the door. I'll play any position, any role I'm asked to play."

Mozart would have enjoyed this

Pre-Season-Partie gestern:

Toronto Maple Leafs - Montreal Canadiens 4:3 (1:1, 3:0, 0:2)
