Liga Preview: Barcelona-Atletico Madrid

Two sides with very similar aims for the season clash at Camp Nou where Barcelona entertain Atletico Madrid.

Neither side were realistically expected to mount a title challenge, but a Champions League place is very much in reach. A reinvigorated Barca currently occupy fourth place, a point ahead of their opponents who sit two places below.

The signing of Edgar Davids continues to look like a masterstroke from Frank Rijkaard, as he seems to instilled a confidence and ruthlessness in the side that was not always on display in the past. He is that all action midfield player the Catalans so badly needed, but is also making others around him perform to their true potential. It will be a great piece of business if Barca can fight off Roma and secure the player on a free transfer come the summer.

Last weekend, a super strike from Ronaldinho handed Rijkaard's men a fine 2-1 win over Osasuna in Pamplona. Many of La Liga's heavyweights have left El Sadar with their tails firmly between their legs over the past couple of seasons, and the fact that Barca came away with the full quota of points is testament to this new found belief in the side.

Atletico were thrashed 3-0 by Valencia in the Mestalla last week, but must put that result behind them and look forward. Los Ches were always likely to have too much for them and that was how it proved.

Ariel Ibagaza (Atletico): the capital club also happen to possess one of the league's very best playmakers in the form of Ibagaza. His close control and dribbling ability will ensure the Barca defence stays on edge for the duration of the 90 minutes.
