COMEBACK KING HUNTER DOES IT AGAIN!

Paul Hunter completed an incredible fight back in the Masters final for the third time to beat Ronnie O’Sullivan 10-9 in a dramatic contest at Wembley tonight (Sunday).

The London venue is undoubtedly Hunter’s favourite, and he likes doing things the hard way here. In 2001 he came from 7-3 down to beat Fergal O’Brien 10-9. A year later he overturned a 5-0 deficit to see off Mark Williams by the same scoreline. Surely he couldn’t do it again?

The 25-year-old from Leeds looked dead and buried as the Rocket surged 7-2 ahead. But he refused to buckle and stormed back to triumph in another final frame thriller.

It was one of the greatest finals in living memory as Hunter showed nerves of steel in a match he never lead until the final ball was potted.

Hunter lifted the glittering new trophy and boosted his bank balance to the tune of £100,000. He becomes only the fourth player, after Stephen Hendry, Steve Davis and Cliff Thorburn, to win the Masters on three or more occasions.

Surviving the intense pressure of the closing stages, Hunter laid to rest the ghost of the Crucible encountered last May when he gave up a 15-9 lead in the semi-finals of the Embassy World Championship, losing 17-16 to Ken Doherty.

O’Sullivan had to settle for a runners-up cheque for £50,000 - and a taste of his own medicine. He beat Steve Davis 9-8 from 8-5 down in the Welsh Open final two weeks ago.

Fingernails were chewed to the bone throughout the venue as the deciding frame began. O’Sullivan potted two long reds but could not manufacture a scoring chance. Hunter crashed in a long pot of his own to set up the first real opportunity.

He could only make 13 but got in again with another brilliant long range red. This time he added a handy 36 to give him control of the frame. A miss on the13th red from the Rocket proved to beHis last shot as Hunter added 14 to secure victory and his sixth major title.

Fiancé Lyndsey joined him by the table amid rapturous applause from the crowd.

Starting the final session 6-2 ahead, O’Sullivan extended his lead to five frames by winning a scrappy first frame with a 34 clearance.

But Hunter launched his recovery by winning the next in three scoring visits for 7-3. O’Sullivan was among the balls first in frame 11 but missed a simple cut on a red to a top corner and his opponent took it with a 102.

Again the Rocket got in first in the 12th frame, but he wobbled a black attempting to force the cue ball into the pack. Hunter rolled in a cool 82 and it was ‘game on’ at the mid-session interval with the score standing at 7-5.

The come-back continued after the break as Hunter knocked in a 38, then ended a safety exchange by blasting in a long red and adding 36 to draw within one frame.

Having lost four in a row, O’Sullivan needed to stop the rot. Both players missed straight-forward chances in the next but when Hunter failed on long pot on the 13th red, the relieved Essex man dished the table with 38 to go 8-6 ahead.

O’Sullivan rattled the easiest of reds to a top corner early in frame 15 and Hunter pulled back again with a brilliant 109. In the next, O’Sullivan built a 45-0 lead then cracked in a superb long red to initiate a run of 41 which put him two up with three to play at 9-7.

Still Hunter battled boldly on, winning the 17th frame with a 110, his fifth ton. O’Sullivan edged 31-13 ahead in the cagey 18th but lost a prolonged safety battle and Hunter stole it with a cool 58.

The clock ticked towards midnight as the 19th and final frame began..and the new day would belong to Hunter.

Hab das Finale gestern gesehen, und muß echt sagen, echt Klasse.

Was mir aufgefallen ist, das die Zuschauer allesamt ziemlich erkältete waren.

FORZA Jäger (mein Familienname).

Schaue mir snooker eigentlich öfters an, beruhigt wie ich finde.

Außerdem kann man einiges für sein eigenes Spiel lernen.
