Manchester City have announced that they have signed England midfielder Gareth Barry in a £12million deal from Aston Villa.

The 28-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Citizens, having come within an ace of joining Liverpool a year ago and having just entered the final year of his Villa deal.

Barry had previously made known his desire to play in the Champions League, but he has now been seduced by the prospect of trying to help City break into the upper echelons in the Premier League.

The versatile left-footer had been with Villa for more than a decade, making nearly 450 appearances in all competitions.

He has also won 29 England caps, having become a key member of the team under both Steve McClaren and current head coach Fabio Capello.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill had earlier stated: "We'd like him to stay, but we understand that he's been at the club for 11 years. If someone came in with the offer of the Champions League, then that's something we'd look at.

"Even if he ran his contract down, I don't think that's something that would concern us greatly and that might show that we'd like him to stay.

"It isn't a matter of us wanting to cash in because he's in his final year. If he said he was going to run it down and see it through, I'd be delighted."

CL spielt er zwar weiter nicht, aber dafür dürfte er in den nächsten 5 Jahren zu den Topverdienern auf der Insel gehören.

Gratulation an die Citizens - dieser grossartige Spieler wird Hughes' Truppe definitiv weiterbringen.
