Hartson fires Celtic to SPL title

Celtic have been crowned Bank of Scotland Premierleague champions for the fourth time after John Hartson's goal was enough to defeat Hearts 1-0 at Parkhead.

The Welsh striker, celebrating his 31st birthday, beat Craig Gordon with a volley from outside the box after just four minutes and Gordon Strachan's side resisted some fierce late pressure to add the league title to the CIS Cup.

Celtic are now 20 points clear of second-placed Hearts with six games remaining and boss Gordon Strachan said: "Nobody could have dreamt that after the start we had.

"After we got beat by Dunfermline here, we've gone 16 games - 14 wins and two draws - that's not bad going.

"I don't care who you are, to keep up with that you need to be a good side. These players have been fantastic."

Skipper Neil Lennon added: "I am very proud of the players, the manager and the coaching staff. This is one of the most fantastic moments of my career."

Hearts coach John McGlynn said: "To bring the championship to Parkhead is great for Gordon Strachan and they deserved it. They were the better team over the season.

"But all credit to Hearts Football Club for the way they played the champions. It was a very good performance and if we do that in our next six games then we will finish second."
