April 2006 (bearbeitet) Manchester United have confirmed that they have signed a deal with American International Group (AIG) to become their new shirt sponsors.AIG become the third name on the famous red shirts, following Sharp and Vodafone, after tying up a £56.5 million contract. The deal lasts for four years and it follows the breakdown of negotiations with Mansion. It is a British record deal, surpassing Chelsea's £10 million per season sponsorship from Samsung, although it is worth less than gambling firm Mansion were prepared to offer. "We are delighted to begin our relationship with AIG," chief executive David Gill told a press conference. Let's be clear. We passed up the opportunity to do the world's biggest shirt deal to do a deal that is right for Manchester United and a deal that underlines our position as the world's leading club. AIG’s global operations complement our great fan-base and we are excited about the global prospects this relationship brings. This is a blue-chip deal for a blue-chip club." AIG's main interests are in general insurance, life insurance and retirement policies, whilst also offering general financial services. Based in New York, they employ almost 100,000 people. Here, David Gill explains why the club turned down "the world's biggest shirt sponsorship deal, for the right shirt sponsorship deal"... We have spent the last few months travelling the world to find the ideal partner to be only the third name on the front of the famous red shirt of Manchester United. From Bryan Glazer, to Andy Anson and his counterpart in Tampa Jeff Ajluni, everyone has played their part in securing this deal. It has been a team effort. We know what a unique club this is. The Manchester United shirt is the most iconic image in world sport and the chance for companies to appear on it is very rare. We also know that this is a special opportunity for us to partner with the right organisation. Our goal was to find an organisation with the right pedigree. One that was hungry to be involved with us. One that had ambitions that match ours. And one that could take full advantage of United’s unique global reach. And we’ve found one. It’s a record breaking deal. It’s worth £56.5 million to the Club over four years and it begins a partnership that we hope will continue for many years to come. Our new sponsor - American International Group, Inc., better known AIG - is a global insurance and financial services company with representation in over 130 countries. It has grown from its origins in the far east into one of the world’s five biggest firms and is the biggest insurer on the planet. Its market capitalisation is over $190 billion and it has a reputation as the thoroughbred in its field. We’re looking to be more accessible to our global fan base, and having a partner with the knowledge and experience of AIG is invaluable. AIG has over 250,000 employees and agents in Asia alone – a region where we have an estimated 40 million fans. This deal presents both of us with so many possibilities. We know that Manchester United can offer high profile exposure for AIG. On and off the pitch, Manchester United always seeks to be both the first and the best. Whether it’s our faith in our Academy over the years, or our approach to sponsors - we’re unique. And let’s be clear, we passed up the opportunity to do the world’s biggest shirt deal, to do the right shirt deal. Our aim is to make this partnership the benchmark for such deals in sport. We like to get to know our partners and we like them to understand our business. We like to understand what they want and what they need. We think it’s a formula that makes sponsorship work for both sides. The new Manchester United shirt – to be launched in the summer with our partner Nike - will carry the AIG logo. To quote a well-known journalist, this deal, “re-establishes the club firmly among the most valuable brand names in world sport.” David Gill, Manchester United Chief Executive Quelle: manutd.com bearbeitet 6.
