Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has confirmed that there is a deal in place for Fabio Cannavaro.

“We already have an agreement with Inter,” revealed the transfer guru on Saturday evening. “All that is missing now is the terms of the contract with the player. Once that is sorted out, Cannavaro will be a Juventus player.”

The statements were made after the 1-0 Trofeo Berlusconi victory over Milan, although the Italian press had already known about the imminent move for a couple of days.

Azzurri captain Cannavaro had been on the verge to a Juventus switch when he was transfer listed by Parma in 2002, but instead opted to join Inter.

His time at the San Siro has been troubled by persistent injuries, seeing him put in just 50 League appearances over two seasons.

As his £2m a season contract expires next summer, Inter are willing to release the 31-year-old defender in a straight swap deal with Uruguayan goalkeeper Fabian Carini.

However, the shot-stopper will remain for another season on loan at Standard Liege in order to qualify him for an EC passport.

Fabio Capello also hinted that a deal for Cannavaro was imminent when he noted, “He made a great central defensive partnership with Lilian Thuram at Parma and I’m sure they will remember that rapport.”

As Cannavaro has travelled to Florence for Sunday’s Pirelli Cup match with the Viola, it’s likely the move will only be completed on Monday.

Fabio Capello has outlined tactical changes to accommodate Fabio Cannavaro, while Carlo Ancelotti jokes about their Trofeo Berlusconi setback.

“We played well and with a relaxed state of mind,” noted Capello after Juve’s 1-0 victory at the San Siro. “Physically we were also stronger than Milan, but I was most impressed with our determination.”

The Bianconeri have won this trophy for the second year running thanks to Ruben Olivera’s lone strike.

“I am certain that we will start the Serie A season with a competitive squad, especially after the character my men showed here.”

Juventus have struggled in defence so far this summer, but the confirmed arrival of Fabio Cannavaro from Inter will further strengthen the side.

“Cannavaro formed an impressive partnership with Lilian Thuram at Parma,” he noted. “They have already won some important competitions together and I trust they haven’t forgotten that rapport.”

This means that Frenchman Thuram will be returned to his favoured central defensive role alongside Cannavaro when the move is made permanent.

Last night director general Luciano Moggi confirmed that “there is an agreement in place with Inter, so all that’s missing are the personal terms of Cannavaro’s contract.”

Meanwhile, Milan were not too unhappy at having lost the Trofeo Berlusconi, as there is a superstition suggesting that the losers go on to win the Scudetto that season.

“We aren’t quite at the top of our fitness levels at the moment,” pointed out Carlo Ancelotti, “and tended to drop off in the second half. Despite that, we wasted far too many scoring opportunities.”

Kaka and Serginho were particularly wasteful, with the young Brazilian firing over two practically open goals.

The Rossoneri crushed Lazio 3-0 for the Italian Supercup, but have now lost two friendly tournaments in a week including the 2-1 setback at Barcelona.

“I’m sure the press will now talk about a Milan side in crisis,” smiled the Coach. “We may as well accept that theory, so that we can celebrate when we emerge from it. In all seriousness, there is nothing dramatically wrong here.”

Inter Milan's Cannavaro must take cut for Juventus move

Juventus are expected to confirm today that they're in negotiations with Inter Milan over Italy skipper Fabio Cannavaro.

The centre-half will have to take a cut from his salary at Inter, accepting terms of around £1.4 million-a-year with Juve to make the deal happen.

Juve's Uruguayan goalkeeper Fabian Carini will move in the opposite direction, but will play on-loan with Standard Liege this season before gaining his Belgian passport and joining Inter for season 2005/06.

Muss agen ich bin gar nicht mal so enttäuscht dass er weg ist.

Hat bei Inter leider nur selten sein Parma Level erreicht.

Außerdem haben wir mit Materazzi und Cordoba zwei absolute Topleute und mit Burdisso ein Riesentalent sowie mit Mihailjovic und Favalli(wenn auch eher links) zwei erfahrene Spieler in der Hinterhand.

Vielleicht holt man trotzdem als Cannavaro Ersatz nun Kompany oder Bonera.

Dass es nun gerade Juventus sein muss und wir lediglich Carini bekommen gefällt mir allerdings nicht.

Wäre ja nicht der erste Spieler, der bei Inter seine frühere Form nicht findet. Fabio hat bei Inter zu wenig vertrauen in sein Können bekommen, deshalb spielte er unsicher und nicht von sich überzeugt, in der Nationalmannschaft hat er sich immer gesteigert.

Dass es nun gerade Juventus sein muss und wir lediglich Carini bekommen gefällt mir allerdings nicht.

Cannavaro agrees Juve deal Monday 30 August, 2004

There is still no official announcement but Juventus have virtually signed Fabio Cannavaro from Inter.

Both clubs agreed a deal over the weekend and the player has today sorted out personal terms with the Bianconeri.

The Italian international will sign a three-year contract after accepting to reduce his salary from around £3.2m to £2.1m a season.

Juventus are understood to have paid no fee after convincing Inter to accept Fabian Carini in a straight swap deal.

The Uruguayan ‘keeper, who underwent a medical today, has signed a four-year contract with the Nerazzurri who see him as a long-term replacement for Francesco Toldo.

The ‘keeper may not arrive at the San Siro until January, or even next summer, as he is currently on loan with Standard Liege.

Cannavaro will now team up with his former Parma colleagues Lilian Thuram and goalkeeper Gigi Buffon in Turin.

Meanwhile, Inter look set to replace Cannavaro with Carlos Alberto Gamarra. His contract expired in June but the Paraguayan, 33, is now set to be handed a new deal.

Juventus FC have signed Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic from AFC Ajax for around €19m while also completing a deal for defender Fabio Cannavaro from FC Internazionale. The latter transfer is an exchange agreement which sends Uruguayan goalkeeper Fabian Carini in the opposite direction.

Scored against Italy

Ibrahimovic, who scored a memorable goal against Italy at UEFA EURO 2004™, arrives at the Stadio Delle Alpi for a reported €19m. The 22-year-old is understood to have signed a four-year contract, official confirmation of which will follow later today. Ibrahimovic scored 13 goals in 16 games to help Ajax win the Eredivisie title last season. He had joined the Amsterdam club from Malmö FF in 2001 for €7.8m and in 2002 hit the winning goal in the Dutch Cup final.

Conflict

Juventus are acquiring a virtuouso talent, an example of which came on 22 August in a 6-2 victory over NAC Breda, when he dribbled past five NAC defenders and the goalkeeper to score. However, he had caused unrest in the Ajax squad after a couple of crude challenges on club colleagues during Sweden's friendly against the Netherlands earlier this month, one of which sidelined the Ajax captain Rafael van der Vaart with an ankle injury. Ironically, Juventus's first UEFA Champions League assignment is away to Ajax on 15 September.

Three-year deal

Cannavaro's arrival in Turin was less of a surprise. The 30-year-old defender has agreed a three-year contract with the Bianconeri, which will pay him the €9m he would have collected in the two years left on his Inter deal. The San Siro club were prepared to lose the Italy captain having signed eight players this summer, including defenders Sinisa Mihajlovic and Nicolas Burdisso.

Parma old boys

Cannavaro made his Serie A debut as an SSC Napoli player against Juventus in 1993. He joined Parma FC in 1995/96 before moving to the San Siro in a €23m deal two years ago. At Juventus he will be reunited with his former Parma team-mates Gianluigi Buffon and Lilian Thuram.

Carini contract

"I'm sure that Thuram and Cannavaro will form a great defensive partnership again," Juventus coach Fabio Capello said. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Carini has inked a four-year contract with Inter. The Uruguayan international transferred to Juventus in 2000/2001 but spent the last two seasons on loan at R. Standard de Liège in Belgium.
