Fadiga's career fear

Khalilou Fadiga has been warned he may not be able to play professional football again after undergoing further heart surgery.

The Bolton Wanderers midfielder has visited a heart surgeon in Belgium after collapsing on the pitch prior to Wednesday's Carling Cup tie with Tottenham.

Fadiga was taken to hospital before being released and he was then sent to Belgium by Trotters boss Sam Allardyce.

After seeing the specialist, the Senegal international has had an automatic defibrillator fitted in an attempt to control his heart defect.

But cardiologist Hugo Vanerman, who performed the surgery, believes there is a doubt over Fadiga being able to play for Bolton again.

"It was an intervention that took no more than half an hour," Vanerman told Belgium's news agency Belga.

"The signs of arrhythmia from a few months ago have shown themselves again.

"The device is to help the patient avoid sudden death if there is a severe disturbance to the rhythm of the heart.

"The patient will probably leave the clinic in the next few days.

"Obviously it is a question of a serious sign of stopping his career as a professional footballer."

Fadiga has made just one appearance for Bolton since joining the club last month, after negotiating his departure from Internazionale, where his heart condition prevented him from forging a career.
