Der in Kasachstan geborene Dimitris Papadopoulos ist eines der vielversprechendsten Talente in Griechenland!

KARRIERE

Nachdem er ins Heimatland seiner Eltern zurückgekehrt war, wurde Dimitris Papadopoulos 1991 im Alter von zehn Jahren in die Nachwuchs-Akademie von Akratitos Liosion aufgenommen. Mit 16 schaffte er den Sprung in die erste Mannschaft, die in wenigen Jahren von der vierten in die erste griechische Liga durchmarschierte!

Dimitris versucht sein Glück in England

2001 wechselte Papadopoulos für 700.000€ von Akratitos zum FC Burnley in die 1st division nach England.

Er musste aber immer wieder für die griechische Nachwuchs-Auswahl spielen, was seine Chancen in England erheblich beeinträchtigte. So kam er in seiner ersten Saison kein einziges Mal in der Liga zum Einsatz.

In seiner 2. Saison beim FC Burnley kam er zwar mehr als 30 mal zum Einsatz und erzielte auch 3 Tore, aber er kehrte für 280.000€ im Juli 2003 nach Griechenland zurück.

Zurück in der Heimat

Papadopoulos landete bei Panathinaikos Athen, einem Verein, der schon sicher für die Champions League qualifiziert war.

Bis jetzt verlief die Saison 2003/2004 für Dimitris sehr erfolgreich!

In der Meisterschaft war er (bis jetzt) 24mal im Einsatz (jedes Mal von Beginn, 12x durchgespielt)! In diesen 24 Spielen erziehlte er 17 Tore! In der Torschützenliste liegt er damit auf Platz 2, zwei Tore hinter Olympiakos-Stürmer Giovanni.

Nicht nur in der Meisterschaft läuft es zur Zeit sehr gut (Panathinaikos ist Tabellenführer), auch im Cup ist Dimitris sehr erfolgreich!

Mit dem Treffer zum 1:0 im Cupfinale gegen den Stadtrivalen Olympiakos (3:1) brachte Papadopoulos sein Team auf die Siegerstraße! Es war sein 1. Titel mit Panathinaikos!

Europacup 2003/2004

In der Champions League lief es leider nicht so erfolgreich.

Am 1. Spieltag ging Panathinaikos im Old Trafford gegen Manchester United mit 0:5 unter, Dimitris spielte bis zur 62. Minute.

Beim 1:1 gegen die Glasgow Rangers am 2. Spieltag saß Papadopoulos bis zur 64. Minute nur auf der Bank. Es folgten die Spiele gegen Stuttgart. Im ersten Spiel wurde er zur Halbzeit ausgewechselt, bei der 1:3-Heimniederlage war er dann 90 Minuten am Feld. Am 5. Spieltag war Dimitris 83 Minuten im Einsatz, 2 Minuten nach seiner Auswechslung erzielte Forlan das 0:1 für ManU. Am letzten Spieltag ging es dann nach Glasgow. PAO musste gewinnen, was sie auch taten - 3:1!

Im UEFA-Cup ging es dann weiter. In der 3. Runde wartete AJ Auxerre aus Frankreich. Nach dem 0:0 aus dem Hinspiel (Dimitris spielte bis zur 63. Minute), verlor man überraschend im eigenen Stadion mit 0:1 - Papadopoulos war nicht dabei.

Nationalmannschaft

Papadopoulos spielte in der U16 und U18 Griechenlands, bevor er im März 2001 zum ersten Mal in der U21 spielte! Er feierte dabei einen tollen Einstand: 2:0 gegen Deutschland! Im U21-Team wurde er bald Kapitän. Am 20. November 2002 wurde Papadopoulos von Teamchef Otto Rehhagel für das Freundschaftsspiel gegen Irland (0:0) zum ersten Mal ins A-Team einberufen.

Er kam bis jetzt auf 5 Einsätze im Nationalteam und erzielte ein Tor.

From rejection to the top

Panathinaikos striker Dimitris Papadopoulos eyes double-fronted success

Panathinaikos striker Dimitris Papadopoulos has his sights on doubles with both club and country only a year after being rejected.

He could complete the first leg on Sunday by winning the Greek championship before leading the line for Greece at Euro 2004 and the Athens Olympics.

Panathinaikos’s top scorer, who only last year was rejected by struggling English first-division club Burnley, has already led them to Greek Cup success after scoring once and creating a second goal in a 3-1 win over local rivals Olympiakos.

If his strike rate continues against lowly Proodeftiki on Sunday, the green half of Athens could celebrate their first league title in eight years.

Second-placed Olympiakos need a home win over Aris to take the title race into the last round of the season.

What a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago the 22-year-old striker was warming the bench at Burnley’s Turf Moor stadium as they tried to avoid relegation.

With Olympic and under-21 commitments looming, Burnley let the forward go to Panathinaikos for a reported half of the 500,000 pounds sterling they paid Greek club Akratitos two years earlier.

With Panathinaikos looking to break local rivals Olympiakos’s seven-year stranglehold on the Greek league, supporters were underwhelmed with their new capture.

But the pacey forward quickly dislodged Nigerian-born Poland international Emmanuel Olisadebe and served notice of his ability with two goals away to OFI in August.

The goals kept coming and Panathinaikos’s revival continued, forcing Greece coach Otto Rehhagel to take note with a call-up to the senior squad in November.

Papadopoulos’s first start two months later against Bulgaria impressed Rehhagel, and with a place in the squad for Portugal beckoning the striker has enjoyed a storming end of season with nine goals in 10 league matches.

Three more in the latter stages of the Greek Cup have helped perennial runners-up Panathinaikos keep their nerve and hold off the challenge of champions Olympiakos.

With only two matches remaining against bottom-table opposition, Panathinaikos are widely tipped in the local media to complete the double.

That should only be the start of an exciting summer for Papadopoulos, whose turn of speed in an otherwise pedestrian frontline featuring Atletico Madrid’s Demis Nikolaidis and Werder Bremen’s Angelos Haristeas is a vital weapon.

The in-form forward is almost certain to be a key player in the Greek Olympic team on home soil.
