Grmblfjx.

CHRISTMAS COMES LATE

Captain Mats helps Leafs snap skid

Mats Sundin is a single man off the ice, but a model father to a group of impressionable young Maple Leafs.

With a youth movement injected into the lineup by a rash of injuries and a three-game losing streak threatening to get ugly last night, the captain opened the scoring and played a huge role in Jeff O'Neill's late 4-3 winner over the Minnesota Wild. Sundin's goal was his 1,200th NHL point.

John Pohl, Alex Steen, Alex Suglobov, Matt Stajan and a host of other 20-somethings were given a friendly shove by Sundin after the morning skate when he was asked about the uneven efforts by many of the kids and the expanded role they'll have to take in the coming weeks. "For many it will be an adjustment time for sure," Sundin said. "Many have only played 10 or 12 minutes a night, some have played a lot more. But guys such as Stajan and Steen have picked up their games and we'll need more of that." Steen, promoted to the first line with Sundin and O'Neill, scored just his third goal of the year last night, while Pohl assisted on Sundin's power-play goal and added another on a penalty shot.

"Mats is very good with the kids, very encouraging," coach Paul Maurice said. "He doesn't have any of that star status in the room, though there are players like him who don't spend a lot of time with kids. He talks to all of them like they're regulars and makes them feel part of the team."

Sundin had a two-goal game in a losing cause against the Washington Capitals on Saturday, in which he continued an unusual march to the penalty box. But that hasn't yet upset Maurice to any great extent. "He has not only played well, but with great intensity," the coach said. "He's playing more minutes, killing penalties and he's doing more things, banging and hitting. His legs have been back for the last week and a half."

Maurice was also enthused about the Minnesota-born Pohl, who delighted his family watching in the North Star State last night. His penalty shot goal on Manny Fernandez made himself and Sundin the first two Leafs to get two such chances in one season. They're a combined 3-for-4. Pohl had missed against the Carolina Hurricanes' Cam Ward 11 days ago, but went with a multi-deke backhand after being tripped by Brent Burns on a breakaway. "This is exactly the time (he turned it on) last year, after he was called up," Maurice said. "He has got a lot of confidence. He seems to get faster and I don't know how he does it."

O'Neill missed an earlier breakaway then buried his 12th of the year with 2:18 to play. Sundin out-drew Mikko Koivu to point man Bryan McCabe, who atoned for his sub-part game with a drive Fernandez let bounce to O'Neill. Steen, with his Wild scout father Thomas watching from the team box, went hard to the net following a tricky Ian White shot early in the third. "Hopefully, the weird one will get him scoring regularly again," O'Neill noted.

"You could feel on the bench that we were hungry for the fourth one," Steen said. "You can't be too patient (in his slump), because you have to turn it around at some point."

LEAFS INVADE MARLIE ROSTER

Leafs undergo a major facelift Devereaux just thelatest farmhand toget called up

The Toronto Maple Leafs just may have to adjust their team name to something like the Toronto Maple-Marlies. The NHL club dipped once again into its American Hockey League farm team yesterday, summoning Boyd Devereaux to balance the roster in case Darcy Tucker is unable to play tonight in Pittsburgh.

With Devereaux on board, the club has a 20-man roster with nine players who were Marlies either this season or last. The injured Andy Wozniewski is also skating with the club, which brings the Marlie factor to 10. "For six or seven guys here, this is the best Christmas of their lives," said Leafs coach Paul Maurice, who coached nine of the 10 players with the Marlies last season.

Devereaux – who played 78 games with Phoenix last year and was in Detroit's training camp this fall – is the only Marlie not previously coached by Maurice. The other nine former Maurice Marlies include Ian White, John Pohl, Carlo Colaiacovo, Ben Ondrus, Alex Suglobov, Kris Newbury, Brendan Bell, J.S. Aubin and Wozniewski.

Tucker's status remains in question. "If there's any way I can be out there, I'll be out there (tonight in Pittsburgh). ... Right now it's a day-to-day thing," Tucker said of his bruised right foot. Tucker took a shot off the foot Tuesday against Minnesota and missed the last two days of practice. A CAT scan at a Toronto hospital Wednesday didn't show any damage, but Tucker is still in pain and must test his foot out in a pre-game skate. "If I skate in the morning practice and it's okay, then fine. ... If not, it'll be a game time decision," Tucker said.

Four other injured Leafs – Kyle Wellwood, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Nik Antropov and Mike Peca – are not even on the radar for the club's game in Pittsburgh tonight and matchup at home tomorrow night against Ottawa.

Devereaux, who started slowly with the Marlies but has been one of their best players in the past two weeks, had just tucked himself into bed at about three o'clock in the morning Thursday after a road trip in Syracuse when his cellphone rang with word he'd been called up to the Leafs. "I wasn't going to answer it. I was pretty groggy," Devereaux said. "My wife was up with our daughter and she answered it for me. It was a surprise, but a nice surprise."

Devereaux signed a pro tryout contract with the Marlies in the fall, shortly after the Red Wings made him a late and surprising cut from training camp.

MID-TERM REPORTS

GOALTENDERS

Andrew Raycroft C- Not exactly overpaid at $1.8 million US, but could be the club's most inconsistent starter in 14 years.

DEFENCE

Bryan McCabe C- Shouldn't $5.75 million get you more? Production slow to return, compounded by defensive errors.

Tomas Kaberle B- Still won't shoot, but that is quibbling when taking stock of his whole game.

Pavel Kubina C- Another costly acquisition. Little impact, no goals, but an upgrade on Berg and Klee.

Hal Gill C- He's helped penalty-killing, but at times hinders 5-on-5 .

Ian White C Surprise winner of the Marlies promotion sweepstakes.

Carlo Colaiacovo C Should stay as sixth D-man, if he stays healthy

Brendan Bell C- Not full-time ready yet, but progress well ahead of last year.

FORWARDS

Mats Sundin A- Ignores the critics, but can't ignore lack of scoring wingers.

Michael Peca B+ Best checking forward is missed.

Darcy Tucker B Deserves a new contract, but don't break the bank.

Kyle Wellwood B Gets points for creativity.

Jeff O'Neill C Should have more than 12 goals.

Alexei Ponikarovsky C See Jeff O'Neill.

John Pohl C More ice time in second half will determine his worth.

Matt Stajan C Works hard under the radar.

Wade Belak C Not a detriment at either forward or defence.

Chad Kilger C Hits, but must score more.

Nik Antropov D+ Can't shake the injury bug.

Alex Steen C- Unable to sustain last year's scoring.

Bates Battaglia C- Made the team, but making no significant impact.

Alex Suglobov D+ No goals in his first 16 games.

COACH, GM

Paul Maurice C Has done some good things early on, but still far from desired results.

John Ferguson C- Stretched on cap space, but needs to pull off a crafty trade by the deadline.
