Wembley F.C.

In June 2012, several former professional footballers agreed to join Wembley F.C. to play in their FA Cup campaign for the new season. Claudio Caniggia and fellow former-internationals Ray Parlour, Martin Keown, Graeme Le Saux, Jaime Moreno, Danny Dichio and Brian McBride, plus David Seaman (goalkeeping coach) and former England manager Terry Venables (technical advisor), have come out of retirement to play for Wembley F.C. who will be featured in a television documentary as they endeavour to help the club play at Wembley Stadium.[6]

Am 28. März 2012 wurde Terry Venables technischer Berater beim Neuntligisten FC Wembley. Sein Engagement wurde durch einen Sponsor ermöglicht. Er soll mit dem Verein beim FA Cup so weit wie möglich kommen.

London, U.K – 21 June 2012

Wembley FC, a non-league football team that plays eight leagues below the top flight, today announced it has assembled a group of ex-international players including David Seaman, Ray Parlour, Martin Keown, Graeme Le Saux, Claudio Caniggia (Argentina) and Brian McBride (U.S.A.) to help them go as far as they can in next season’s FA Cup.

The signings by Wembley FC were secured with the support of its sponsor Budweiser, the lead partner of The FA Cup, which earlier in the year recruited former England manager Terry Venables as the club’s Technical Advisor.

The all-star line-up has been coaching the 34 player strong amateur squad for the past four months and will now add their experience on the playing field starting with the first kick of the new FA Cup 2012/13 Season – an extra preliminary round tie on August 11, 2012.

Jason Warner, Global VP Budweiser, said, “As a long-standing supporter of football at all levels, Budweiser is committed to championing the magic of The FA Cup and its ability to create unique memories that players and communities will never forget. We are pleased to continue to support Wembley FC as they strive to achieve their dreams and we think their story will appeal to – and inspire – football fans around the world.”

Announces New T.V. Programme: Dream. On. The Journey of Wembley FC Budweiser is also announcing that it has partnered with Evan Weinstein, Co-Executive Producer of The Amazing Race and seven-time Emmy Award winner, to document Wembley FC’s preparation and progress through the world’s oldest domestic cup tournament in a new international TV show, Dream. On. The Journey of Wembley FC

Premiering in the UK on ESPN, Dream. On. The Journey of Wembley FC will bring to life the team’s journey and is set to raise the profile of grassroots football in the UK.

Alan Fagan, ESPN Group Director, Advertising & Sponsorship Sales, EMEA comments, “We’re delighted to partner with Budweiser to showcase Wembley FC’s FA Cup journey in this very exciting show. The series will engage with and inspire football fans across the UK and internationally, giving a real insight into grassroots football, the very foundations of the sport.”

Unveils New Team Crest and Umbro® Kit

To kick off the new season a new club crest has been designed which will make the most of Wembley FC’s motto, A Posse Ad Esse, ‘From Possibility to Reality’, further echoing the club’s upcoming ambitions. In addition, sportswear company Umbro® is providing the entire squad and management with stylish new kit and training wear.

Ray Parlour, former England and Arsenal player, said: “I’ve always believed grassroots football is essential to the lifeblood of the game so when I got the call asking if I would like to come out of retirement and help raise its profile I jumped at the chance. I’m looking forward to working with Terry Venables again and helping a group of talented footballers achieve their dreams of playing in The FA Cup and seeing how far they can go in the tournament.”

Ian Bates, Wembley FC manager, comments: “The opportunity to learn from ex-professionals like Parlour and Seaman who have been there and done it will give us the best chance possible to go further than we ever have done in next season’s FA Cup. The initiative shines a light on non-league football reminding people of the importance of amateur football in contributing to the development of the national game. A year ago we were playing in front of an empty grandstand and the clubhouse was falling down. Now the investment means great times are waiting for Wembley FC and we can’t wait to kick off our FA Cup campaign.”

Brian Gumm, Chairman of Wembley FC, said: “We’re not a big club but we have big ambitions. With Budweiser as our sponsor we now have a shot at making those dreams come true.”

FA Cup lead sponsor, Budweiser, today announced an agreement with Wembley FC that will see the iconic global beer brand sponsor the non-league football club effective immediately.

The deal forms part of Budweiser’s long-term FA Cup commitment to grassroots football, championing clubs at all levels and bringing the romance and heritage of the tournament closer to the fans.

Budweiser will be working closely with Wembley FC to bring forward infrastructure improvements to enhance the club and player facilities, including a clubhouse upgrade and provision of a team minibus.

Other initiatives include the implementation of a new responsible drinking programme as well as promotion of the club in the wider Wembley community. Jason Warner, Global VP Budweiser, comments, “We believe that the best way to champion the FA Cup is to celebrate its uniqueness from the grassroots up. Wembley FC has an incredible heritage and story to tell. We look forward to helping fulfil their dreams.”

Budweiser’s continued support of local teams in The FA Cup follows on from last year’s success with the first-ever live streaming of a sporting event on facebook which saw over 30,000 people worldwide view the extra-preliminary round match between Wembley FC and Ascot United. This ambitious move will hopefully see the football underdogs’ FA Cup journey continue further than their First Qualifying Round exit in the 2011/12 season.

Iain Newell, Budweiser’s Marketing Director, added: “The sponsorship of Wembley FC is consistent with Budweiser’s commitment to the sport of football and our involvement with the FA Cup. The type of improvements with Wembley FC will showcase our intent of working with grassroots football in the UK.” Brian Gumm, Chairman of Wembley FC, comments: ““We’re not a big club but we have big ambitions. With Budweiser as our sponsor we now have a shot at making those dreams come true.”

London, 28 March, 2012 – In a dream move for non-league side Wembley FC, the club is today announcing that legendary football manager Terry Venables is to become its new Technical Advisor.

The appointment follows the club’s new sponsorship deal with Budweiser announced last week and comes as part of an ambitious bid for Wembley FC to exceed all expectations and go as far as they can in next season’s FA Cup.

Ex-England manager Terry Venables is no stranger to The FA Cup having won the trophy with Tottenham Hotspur, both as a player in 1967 and as manager in 1991. He has been appointed Technical Advisor of non-league Wembley FC to mentor the team’s manager Ian Bates.

Terry Venables comments, “Managing, coaching and teaching football has been an essential part of my life for over 30 years. This opportunity to share my knowledge of decades with an eager group of players and coaches was too important to turn down. If they are willing to learn, I am willing to teach. Grassroots football is essential for the lifeblood of the professional game and if I can leave Wembley FC in a better position than I found it then it will be a job well done. It is early days but the signs are encouraging.”

With an impressive CV that has seen ‘El Tel’ manage at the highest level, Budweiser and Wembley FC are convinced he is the right man to help guide the team to success in the 2012/13 season. Speaking at his first club meeting this week, the new Technical Advisor added that he’s as hungry as ever to win and take the club forward

.

Wembley FC’s motto, A Posse Ad Esse, ‘From Possibility to Reality’, echoes the club’s ambitions and manager Ian Bates is optimistic about the squad’s prospects for the season saying, “This is a tremendous opportunity for Wembley FC. To have a football legend like Terry Venables mentor not just me, but the whole club is a dream come true. I believe that our passion combined with his expertise will propel the club to new levels. Terry’s arrival has brought extra magic to this already fantastic experience for the club and we’re looking forward to the journey.”

Iain Newell, Budweiser’s UK Marketing Director, added, “We believe that the best way to champion The FA Cup is to celebrate its uniqueness from the grassroots up helping to create unexpected moments and real anticipation for what may come. We’re pleased to be able to support Wembley FC as they strive to achieve their dreams and we think their story will really resonate with FA Cup fans regardless of which team they support.”

The cameras are rolling and tomorrow marks a historic moment for The FA Cup down at Vale Farm. It is the first time a tie at this stage has ever been shown live on TV! We’re also being beamed around the world through Facebook as well.

There’s definitely been a buzz around the place this week in the build up and we’re really hoping people come down to cheer the team on, support the legends and make a day of it.

Our players are building up for one of the biggest games of their lives. All eyes will be on our third meeting against Langford as our squad sees a host of former football internationals including Ray Parlour, Martin Keown, Graeme Le Saux, Claudio Caniggia and Brian McBride step out for us tomorrow.

El Tel in his advisory role has been great for the club. He’s been there and done it and, alongside the legends, has passed on a wealth of experience to the squad. We hope it comes through in the game on Saturday!

It should be a close game tomorrow, a tough one to call. But hopefully all our hard work will pay off with a win and progression to the next round. We also wish Langford the very best and hope they enjoy their day out at Vale Farm.

Our journey is to be shown as part of a documentary series to be broadcast on ESPN from 16 August 2012 at 10pm. The eight part series called ‘Dream.On. The Journey of Wembley FC’ chronicles the life of grassroots football in the UK, looking specifically at our club and the signing of a number of household names within the squad and staff.

Remember, if you can’t make it down to Vale Farm, you can tune into ESPN, www.facebook.com/budweiseruk or www.BudUnited.com from 12.30pm GMT on August to watch the game.

The US lager giant Budweiser has risked a potential PR own goal by signing a string of former internationals to play for Wembley FC, the non-league side it backs, in next season's FA Cup, which it also sponsors.

The Football Association, which receives an estimated £24m from Budweiser over three years to sponsor the world's oldest knockout competition, said the US company had not broken any rules but stressed the Wembley FC stunt did not have anything to do with its own arrangement with the brand.

After earlier this season signing up Terry Venables as a technical adviser for the club, which plays in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Football League, it has now unveiled six former internationals who have promised to come out of retirement to play in the FA Cup.

The former England players Ray Parlour, Martin Keown and Graeme Le Saux, the Argentinian Claudio Caniggia and the American striker Brian McBride have all signed. The former Arsenal and England No1 David Seaman has also come on board as the new goalkeeping coach.

While Budweiser believes it is buying into the romance of the competition, the PR stunt has already drawn criticism from fans of other non-league clubs, who perceive it as unfair. The FA said Budweiser had not broken any rules. "It's not an FA matter. It's a separate sponsorship deal," said a spokesman.

Budweiser has pursued a similar strategy in other sports that it sponsors in the US and elsewhere.

"I've always believed grassroots football is essential to the lifeblood of the game so when I got the call asking if I would like to come out of retirement and help raise its profile I jumped at the chance," said Parlour. "I'm looking forward to working with Terry Venables again and helping a group of talented footballers achieve their dreams of playing in The FA Cup and seeing how far they can go in the tournament."

The Wembley FC manager Ian Bates defended the idea. "The initiative shines a light on non-league football reminding people of the importance of amateur football in contributing to the development of the national game," he said.

"A year ago we were playing in front of an empty grandstand and the clubhouse was falling down. Now the investment means great times are waiting for Wembley FC and we can't wait to kick off our FA Cup campaign."

The experiment will be followed by ESPN for a new fly on the wall documentary, charting the club's progress in next season's FA Cup.
