Premiership Transfers: Who Went Where In January

02/04/2004. The January transfer window closed at 15:00 GMT on 2 February with a typically late flurry of activity. The mid-season market was dominated by single significant purchases by the Premiership's big three – Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea - though Spurs made a major splash just minutes before the window closed.

Overall, the market reflected the economic realities of the game at the moment: the three clubs making progress in the Champions League spending heavily compared with the rest; but the majority of deals being loans or free transfers.

Another feature, of course, was the seeming inevitability of the biggest clubs getting their way - making an initial, unrealistically low bid for their targeted player, who then becomes so unsettled that it is simply a matter of time before the buying club raise their offer to an acceptable level.

In this way was Louis Saha lured from Fulham to Manchester United for just under £13 million; and Scott Parker from Charlton Athletic to Chelsea for £10 million. The cash received by the reluctant sellers represents a poor trade in the short term because their season is disrupted by the loss of their best player and there is insufficient time during the window to spend the money wisely on replacements.

Indeed, the fact of the closing window pressurises the whole buying and selling business by compressing major decisions about players' futures into unfeasibly short time-spans. An added incentive for targeted players to move (apart from possibly doubled wages) is the fear that by the next time the window opens, the interested club will have signed someone else and lost interest. Loyalty is inevitably sacrificed on the altar of opportunity, the whole thing being fuelled as ever by money.

Apart from the Saha and Parker deals, the other transfers of note involving Premiership clubs this January included Arsenal's surprise capture of the Spanish wonderkid Jose Antonio Reyes. The way the deal is structured he'll become the Gunners' record signing, and a great deal is expected of the 20-year-old international. However, his first start for his new club ended on an embarrassing note when he put through his own goal in the Carling Cup Semi-Final second leg at Middlesbrough.

Spurs pulled off a coup that took even the player involved by surprise, Jermain Defoe moving from West Ham to White Hart Lane just before the deadline for £7 million plus Bobby Zamora, who went in the opposite direction to join his beloved Hammers.

Also leaving West Ham was David James, who joined Manchester City for £2 million on the retirement through injury of David Seaman.

Newcastle sold Nolberto Solano to Aston Villa for £1.5 million, upsetting many of their fans in the process, and Carl Cort to Wolves for £2 million to end a relationship that had been blighted by the player's injuries.

Like many clubs, the Magpies let more players go than they recruited, indicative of pressures to cut costs.

Birmingham City, so active last January, were relatively quiet this time, just bringing in Martin Taylor for Blackburn Rovers for £1.25 million shortly before the deadline. Portsmouth assumed the mantle of busiest recruiting club, with seven players arriving at Fratton Park to assist in the club's relegation fight.
