Das englische Team trifft heute auf Kroatien. Hier ist die Preview:

Sven Goran Eriksson will steer clear of the kind of mass substitution which saw him heavily criticised following the defeat to Australia when England take on Croatia in tonight's Sky Live game.

The Swede changed virtually the whole team at half-time at Upton Park as his side were beaten 3-1 by the Socceroos back in February.

Since then FIFA boss Sepp Blatter has vowed to crack down on such tactics, and Eriksson is likely to be far more restrained with his changes at Portman Road.

Injuries may help him in that regard, with Southampton's James Beattie the only out-and-out striker available to replace one of the likely starting duo of Michael Owen and Emile Heskey.

At the back, John Terry should begin the game alongside Rio Ferdinand in the middle, and with Sol Campbell and Jonathan Woodgate both back at their clubs, Matthew Upson provides the only real alternative.

Eriksson has more scope for experiment in midfield, where captain David Beckham is unlikely to play 90 minutes as he continues to battle a slight back problem.

Beckham, Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Nicky Butt are likely to start, with Kieron Dyer, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Trevor Sinclair all ready to play some part after the break.

Phil Neville and Danny Mills are competing for the right-back slot, while Wayne Bridge and Ashley Cole will share the left-back duties and Liverpool's Chris Kirkland is likely to win his first cap in goal as a half-time replacement for David James.

Fans could die, Sven warns

England fans are being warned from all corners to resist the temptation to travel for next month's deciding Euro 2004 qualifier in Turkey.

Yesterday coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said supporters could be risking their lives if they make the journey to Istanbul.

And today the Football Supporters Association, who defied FA advice in encouraging England fans to attend Saturday's 2-1 win over Macedonia, said that the October 11 match will be 'very different'.

The Football Association have rejected their ticket allocation following the history of ugly scenes surrounding games between the two countries, including the killing of two Leeds fans in Istanbul three years ago.

However, about 250 England fans bought black market tickets for Saturday's game in Macedonia, when their unofficial presence was applauded by players, led by captain David Beckham.

The FA are set to remind the England players not to repeat such actions in Turkey next month, but their prime concern is to stop fans travelling there in the first place.

They are therefore seeking an urgent clarification from the Turkish football federation after weekend reports claimed that they are prepared to sell tickets direct to thousands of England fans.

Kevin Miles, the FSA international coordinator who was in Skopje for the weekend qualifier, said the situation surrounding the game may simply be too volatile.

Speaking from Macedonia today, he said: 'Without wanting to pre-judge what we find there, the impression I'm getting is that it's going to be very different from Macedonia.

'From the discussions I've had, it appears that there is a significant danger and a significant risk to the safety of English football fans, and we'll be stressing that in the information we bring back.

'We haven't finalised any plans and there are a lot of people who have to talk about it.

'I'm more than happy to enter into discussions with the FA or with anybody else about how we should operate.

'The safety of supporters is obviously the main concern, but we need a little bit of realism about the situation as well, and it's probably unrealistic to expect that no fans will travel.'

Yesterday Eriksson warned: 'Of course, I should like to see fans at games but, if it's a security problem, then it's better not to [travel] because you can risk to be injured and can even risk your life, which happened when Leeds were in Turkey.

'If the security men say it's a problem, then you should listen to them.'

Haluk Ulusoy, the president of the Turkish federation, was nevertheless quoted as effectively inviting England fans to travel to Istanbul for the match.

He reportedly told the News of the World: 'If there are [England] fans who want to watch this game, they can come and get tickets from us. We will sell as many tickets to them as they want - 1,000, 2,000 or even 3,000.'

A concerned FA head of media Adrian Bevington said: 'We will be discussing this with the Turkish federation over the next 24 hours to establish what their view is with regard to this article.

'We would like to strongly reaffirm the position of ourselves, the Government and the police that no fans should travel to Turkey.'
