MANCHESTER UNITED MANCHESTER CITY

Datum: So., 09.02.2003

Uhrzeit: 13:30

Ort: Manchester

Stadion: Old Trafford ("Stadium of Dreams"), sold out

Stats:

ManUtd.: Ruud v. Nistelrooy - 11 Treffer

Paul Scoles - 8 Treffer

Diego Forlan - 6 Treffer

ManCity.: Nicolas Anelka - 12 Treffer

Marc Vivien Foe - 7 Treffer

Shaun Goater - 6 Treffer

EDIT:

MOST SIGNIFICANT STATS

United go into this Sunday's 128th Manchester League derby aiming to chalk up a 50th victory over their local rivals, but City have the chance of a first League 'double' over the arch enemy in 33 years to provide manager Kevin Keegan with an early birthday present. He's 52 next Friday.

Sir Alex Ferguson should not need to motivate his side. They are still smarting from the humbling 3-1 loss in the last ever local derby at Maine Road in November when Shaun Goater got a brace and Nicolas Anelka, the other. With Southampton's Wayne Bridge injured, Anelka is the only remaining outfield player to have started every League and Cup match for his club this season.

City go into game with two defeats from the last three Premiership outings. The most recent being the shock 1-2 home loss to relegation threatened West Brom.

United may have cause to be grateful to City. The embarrassing defeat three months ago ignited what had been a stuttering season by their own very high standards and they haven't looked back since.

The Old Trafford club are in blistering form. They have won their last six League and Cup games in a row, their last half dozen Premiership matches on the bounce, ten of their last dozen in the top flight and 17 of their last 20 in all competitions. They have conceded just 24 goals in 26 League games and are mounting a serious bid for quadruple honours.

If Arsenal lose at Newcastle in the other Sunday game, and the Red Devils win here, the Gunners and United will be equal on 56 points at the pinnacle of the Premiership table, with each having 11 to play.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has scored seven goals in United's last eight matches and has totalled 26 for his club this season.

Aston Villa's veteran keeper Peter Schmeichel has worked hard to regain his fitness in time to meet his former club. The Dane has never been on the losing side in a Manchester derby.

Victory for City would complete a second 'double' of the season, after home and away victories over Fulham. It would also inflict on United a first 'double' reverse of the League crusade.

Head to Head:

....................... All Utd City Draws

Total meetings* 137 54 37 46

Dear Supporter

The Manchester Derbies are always massive games. After the last game where we threw the match away, we want to make amends for that. It's not a matter of revenge, but we want to make up for the supporters' disappointment on the day, because it was a massive disappointment. I don't think you can wallow in the defeat. You want it to wash away quickly, that is your job as a manager.

Most of the players who played that day understand the meaning of Derbies, they're mostly homebred players. But some hadn't been in the Derby before. Maybe some of the players will realise the importance of the Manchester Derby now.

I think Manchester City have done very well this season. Kevin Keegan has done well and added to his squad. He is an ambitious lad, and there is no question that he wants to see Manchester City in a better situation than they have been. I think it is good to have them in the Premiership, I must say that. It is good to have Derby games.

I think we have hit our form at the right time. This is an important stage of the season. Arsenal will know we are right behind them. We just hope they will drop enough points for us to take over. The important thing is that we concentrate on our own game - hopefully that will help us.

Confidence and belief come from winning games. It doesn't matter whether you are Manchester United or any other club - you are human, and you thrive on confidence.

I think there are some players who have a self-confidence that can withstand almost any battering - their confidence is uppermost. But not a whole team. And when we get results we all feel it, particularly because the expectations on this club are so great. We had a bad spell at the beginning of the season, but the one thing that they did show was determination and a desire to do something about it. I think the players have done exceptionally well this season.

Enjoy the game

Sir Alex Ferguson

Match Preview ~ Manchester United v Manchester City

FA Barclaycard Premiership, Sunday 9 February 2003, K.O. 12:30 GMT

Peter Schmeichel is fit. The former United goalkeeper, who joined Kevin Keegan's City revolution in the summer, has sat out the Laser Blues' last three matches with a calf injury but is set to return for Sunday's Manchester Derby.

Peter's presence merely serves to add spice to what is already a massive fixture. Local pride is at stake, and although the players will say that the match is just about three points, you know they're not being totally honest.

Ninety minutes on Sunday afternoon will affect the mood of offices throughout Greater Manchester - and beyond - as workmates who support the rivals will be praying for ammunition to use on Monday morning. And beyond.

The Blue half of Manchester have not stopped going on about the Maine Road match earlier this season and it has proved to be the low-point of United's season so far. The 3-1 defeat proved to be the kick up the backside the players needed, and the lads have won ten of their thirteen matches since that dark day.

City, by contrast, have lost five of their fourteen Premiership matches and have won only six - less than half of their outings. The theory that beating United would be the highpoint of an otherwise disappointing season seems to be holding water...

Leeds Utd (from): Robinson, Kelly, Harte, Kewell, McPhail, Wilcox, Smith, Mills, Bakke, Seth Johnson, Duberry, Okon, Kilgallon, Milner, Simon Johnson, Burns, Lucic, Martyn.

West Ham (from): James, Johnson, Repka, Dailly, Lomas, Brevett, Bowyer, Carrick, Cole, Sinclair, Defoe, Ferdinand, Kanoute, di Canio, Pearce, van der Gouw, Schemmel.
