Woodgate nears Real move

Newcastle United defender Jonathan Woodgate is set to complete his £13.4m move to Spanish side Real Madrid on Friday, according to his agents SFX.

Representatives for Woodgate will fly to Madrid on Thursday to discuss personal terms for the 24-year-old.

"We are very hopeful that we can agree terms and the deal will go through," said an SFX spokesperson.

"If agreed it will be a period of great business with Michael Owen and Jonathan at one of the world's greatest clubs."

If terms are agreed, with Woodgate set to be offered between £70,000-£80,000-a-week, he will undergo a medical to seal the transfer.

This could be the major stumbling block, with the former Leeds centre-back still expected to be out for two to three weeks as he recovers from a serious thigh injury.

But Madrid coach Juan Antonio Camacho is desperate to boost his defence ahead of the new Spanish season.

The transfer window closes on 31 August and the defender would have to prove his fitness if the move was to happen.

Woodgate has not played since rupturing a thigh muscle in April and recently visited a German specialist in a bid to discover why it has taken so long for the injury to clear.

The defender has managed just 28 league games for the Magpies since his £9m move from Leeds in January 2003 and played 18 times in the Premiership last season.

Real have already bolstered their defence this summer with the signing of Argentine defender Walter Samuel from Roma.

Jose Angel Sanchez - who negotiated David Beckham and Owen's transfers to Real - is reported to have recently visited Tyneside to try and thrash out the terms of a deal.

Woodgate, who joined Newcastle from Leeds in 2003, has three years left on his current deal.

Leeds would not stand to make any money from the deal, as BBC Sport can confirm they did not negotiate a sell-on clause when they sold Woodgate.

Official: Madrid Sign Woodgate

8/19/2004 10:49:00 PM

It's official; Jonathan Woodgate is now a Real Madrid player. The English defender joins the Galacticos from Newcastle for 20 million euros.

It was no secret that Real Madrid were looking to shore up their defence and now they've finally got their man, as Jonathan Woodgate will become one of three English players to wear a Real Madrid jersey this season.

The 24 year old defender would have been included in England's Euro 2004 squad but went down with an injury prior to the start of the tournament.

Once Woodgate passes his medical on Saturday morning, he will sign a five year deal.

Real Madrid sign Woodgate

Jonathan Woodgate has signed for Real Madrid from Newcastle in a £13.4m move after passing a medical on Friday.

There had been concerns the 24-year-old defender, who has been nursing a thigh injury, would not pass the rigorous fitness tests at the Bernabeu.

But Woodgate has tied up the deal, which will see him earn in the region of £80,000 a week.

He joins England team-mates David Beckham and Michael Owen, who signed for the Spanish club last week.

Injury-prone Woodgate suffered various injuries during his time at Newcastle, playing only 37 of the 128 games for the Magpies since his move from Leeds in January 2003.
