Superliga Preview: Benfica-Sporting Lisbon Renew Rivalry In New Stadium

01/03/2004. The Lisbon derby has been the center of attention in Portugal over the past few days and with kick-off just one day away, here is a preview of the classic.

BACKGROUND

This will be the first 'super-classico' played at the new Estadio Da Luz.

This is the 70th derby these two sides have faced off in and Sunday's match is shaping up to be another cracking contest.

Both sides are trailing leaders FC Porto in the standings and they cannot afford to drop any points.

Benfica have won 38 against their Lisbon rivals, 19 draws, and 12 losses.

They have also outscored the Lisbon Lions 148-93.

Joao Pinto has played for both clubs in this derby but has scored only twice.

Benfica:

The newly acquired Fysass will not be eligible to play in this match, as he was not registered in time, after signing with the club on January 1st.

Central defender Argel will also miss this match, as manager Jose Camacho did not name him to the squad for the second straight match.

Petit makes his return to Benfica after a long injury lay-off.

Simao Sabrosa will be a starter in this match as he has fully recovered from injury.

Brazilian defender Luisao has also been named to the squad after speculation that his country's Olympic team would not release him for this match.

The Lisbon Eagles will be debuting their centenary kits in this match.

Sporting Lisbon:

Manager Fernando Santos cannot count on the injured Carlos Martins, Mário Sérgio, and Rodrigo Tello for this match.

Tonito and Quiroga took late fitness tests and have been ruled fit to play.

Santos has also called up young defender Paíto to the squad.

Elpidio Silva has also been named to the squad for Sunday's big game, but is unlikely to start as he is lacking match fitness after nursing an injury over the holidays.
