RANIERI: CARLO SHOULD PLAY FOR ENGLAND

Eingefügtes Bild

Claudio Ranieri today took the extraordinary step of urging his Italian goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini to turn his back on their country and take up British citizenship to become England's number one.

The 29-year-old, son of AC Milan and Italy legend Fabio Cudicini, would be eligible for Sven-Goran Eriksson's team in July next year as long as he does not play a competitive game for Giovanni Trapattoni's national team before Euro 2004.

Italian Ranieri, who has masterminded Cudicini's rise from obscurity and tied him to Stamford Bridge on a contract until summer 2007, said: "If I was Carlo, I'd choose England.

"Italy have two great goalkeepers in Toldo and Buffon and it is difficult to fight with them when you play in another country.

"I'm proud that England people like Carlo. A lot of people in Italy think the English don't appreciate Italian players - but that's not true."

Cudicini, who will line up for Chelsea against Birmingham at St Andrews tomorrow, moved to England from Castel Di Sangro in July 1999, in a budget £160,000 deal.

Home Office rules would allow him to apply for British citizenship after five years in the country - which he will achieve next July - and FIFA laws will authorise him to play for England if he has still not appeared in a competitive fixture for Italy.

Cudicini, a sensation between the sticks for Chelsea this season, has played one under-21 friendly and was an unused substitute in the senior team's 1-1 draw with Turkey at Pescara in November.

Tomorrow Trapattoni names his squad for Wednesday's friendly against Portugal in Genoa - but Cudicini is behind Francesco Toldo and Gianluigi Buffon in the battle for the first team jersey.
