SV Ried 1-0 Northampton Town

Sullerman 55

HALF TIME 0-0

Northampton Town kicked off their pre-season campaign against the recently promoted SV Ried in Austria on Tuesday evening.

The Cobblers matchday squad included a number of youth team players who were late inclusions to join the professional players on the trip. Youth team left back Tom Bonner started the match, while Matthew Gearing and Joe Harvey were on the substitutes bench.

SV Ried, full of confidence after winning promotion a couple of weeks ago, started the match brighter but the young Cobblers defence were able to keep the hosts chances to a minimum.

As the first half wore on, the Cobblers gradually found their stride and both Scott McGleish and Josh Low had a couple of half chances before the break but were unable to convert.

The Cobblers ended the first half on top, although the scoreline remained goalless at the interval.

Josh Low was close to opening the scoring in the early stages of the second half. Eric Sabin broke clear and found himself one on one with the keeper. Sabin's shot was pushed away but the ball broke loose to Low, who unfortunately could not quite convert the rebound.

The only goal of the game arrived 10 minutes after the break through Sullerman, and after falling behind the Cobblers made a host of substitutions to give a run out to a number of players.

Although the Cobblers had a number of half chances, the equaliser never came and Colin Calderwood's side opened with a narrow defeat in an even match.

SV Ried, who kick off their Austrian Premier Division campaign next week, are at the end of their pre-season campaign while the Cobblers were happy enough to start their build up with a competitive work out.

Colin Calderwood's side are next in action on Thursday evening, against Vocklabruck (1730 BST)

Cobblers: Bunn, Bojic, Tom Bonner (youth), Hunt, Chambers, Brett Johnson, Rowson, Galbraith, McGleish, Low, Jess. Subs: Joe Harvey (youth), Harper, Graham, Taylor, Gearing (youth), Bradley Johnson, Sabin, Kirk. :smoke::smoke::D
